Heinz Fuchs
Heinz studied modern languages at Bonn and Toulouse and after completing his PhD he decided to become a librarian for which he trained in Göttingen and Cologne. He has spent most of his professional life in academic libraries. Through his work he came in contact with Cambridge University and was elected to a visiting fellowship at Sidney Sussex College in 1997. He has extensive experience in both alumni relations and development as a volunteer. He has served on the Cambridge University Alumni Relations Board from 2008 to 2014 and was the Chair of the Networks and Volunteers Working Group for 2 years. In addition to that he was a member of the Sidney Sussex Society Committee from 1999 to 2023.
Heinz’s link with St John’s comes through his son Matthias who studied for a Master of Science degree in psychology at Durham. When Matthias left in 2013 he became a visiting fellow of St John’s and has since been active on a number of College committees and boards (development, boat club, college library, SCR). When Heinz retired from his post as a librarian he was invited to become the Postgraduate Tutor from 2017 to 2018.He stayed in touch with Durham during the COVID years and became a governor of the Durham Sixth Form Centre from 2019 to 2023. This was an interesting addition to his interest in education reflected in his liverymanship of the Worshipful Company of Educators (London) and his fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts. Heinz continues to be active as a Boat Club governor and a member of the college library committee.
