Formals

Dress up, gather around the table, and enjoy one of St John’s most cherished traditions. Formal dinners bring together students, staff and guests for evenings of good food, conversation and community.

Our different formals

Formal dinners are a much-loved part of College life at John’s. Held several times each term and organised jointly by the Vice Principal’s Office, the SJCR, and the Catering team, they offer a chance to dress up, wear your gown, and enjoy a free three-course meal with friends, staff, and guests – just bring your own wine or soft drinks.

Most formals follow long-table dining with short speeches from the Principal or guests, and themed formals such as Fairtrade & Environment or Love & Pride are regular highlights.

Our Once a Johnian career-themed formals bring together alumni, students, and staff for networking, while the termly black-tie “mega-formal” adds a touch of sparkle to the season.

The SJCR organises two annual balls: Bailey Ball in the autumn, held in College, and the Summer Ball, held at an external venue.

Managing and attending formal dinners in my second year allowed me to stay connected to college despite living out. I could reunite with my friends from first year, get to know students from other years better and give back to John’s by supporting one of Durham’s best traditions!
