Support the student experience

St John’s offers a distinctive, student-led community with thriving sports, societies, and performing arts. You can make a difference by supporting a particular cause, event, or club: from St John’s College Boat Club to the Bailey Theatre Company, John’s Music Society, or any activity that shaped your own time here.

Student Opportunities & Hardship Fund

Made possible through the generosity of alumni and friends, this fund enriches the student experience by providing bursaries, hardship support and small grants for extra-curricular activities. It helps ensure every Johnian can participate fully in College and University life, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Accommodation scholarships

Living in College helps students build friendships, feel part of the community and make the most of their time at Durham. Yet for some, the cost of accommodation can be a barrier. Our ambition is to expand our programme of accommodation scholarships, supporting students from lower-income backgrounds, first-generation students and others who might not otherwise be able to live in College. The David Wilkinson First Generation Scholars Fund, launched in 2023, is the first step towards that vision.

Fostering Christian teaching, learning, and research

Since 1909, St John’s has been a place of Christian worship, learning and leadership. Today, we continue to serve the Church and wider society through transformational teaching, formation and research, remaining true to our generous Christian foundation while engaging thoughtfully with the questions and challenges of our time.

Preserving and improving our historic estate

Our Grade II-listed buildings have been home to generations of Johnians. We are committed to caring for this special place for the future, improving accessibility, sustainability and student spaces through our ambitious capital redevelopment programme.

Sharing our heritage

From our Norman Chapel to the Georgian townhouses of the Bowes family, St John’s is shaped by nearly 900 years of history. As custodians of this remarkable place, we are committed to conserving our heritage while opening it up to the wider community through events, education and public engagement.
