As a recognised College of Durham University, St John’s manages its own accommodation and residence charges independently from the University.
Tuition fees are paid directly to Durham University, while College accommodation charges are paid to St John’s College.
Our accommodation costs are aligned with Durham University’s accommodation costs, with only minor variations between room types.
Some aspects of College and student life may involve additional optional charges. These can include:
The SJCR (St John’s Common Room) is an independent student charity and membership is optional. Further information on optional costs and charges is provided during induction and throughout the year.
We offer a range of College-based scholarships and bursaries at St John’s. These awards recognise potential, support access, and help students make the most of every opportunity.
The Student Opportunities Fund helps ensure that financial circumstances do not prevent students from taking part in the wider opportunities of College and university life.
Limited funding is available each year to support current St John’s students with travel, education, research, volunteering, outreach and other project costs that enrich their university experience.
Current students can apply through St John’s SharePoint.
The David Wilkinson First Generation Scholars Fund was established in 2023 by the outgoing Principal, Revd Professor David Wilkinson, himself a first-generation scholar from the North East. The fund promotes widening participation and access by supporting students from first-generation, lower-income and underrepresented backgrounds to live in College during their first year at St John’s.
The fund offers up to two accommodation scholarships annually, covering up to half of College accommodation costs.
Current students can apply through St John’s SharePoint.
One scholarship of £1,000 is awarded annually to a new postgraduate student at St John’s with a creative project or initiative that will contribute to College life and the postgraduate community.
The scholarship is intended to provide additional financial support for students who have secured partial, but not full, funding from other sources.
Current students can apply through St John’s SharePoint.
The Leadbeater Award was established in 2018 through a generous gift to the College in memory of Gordon Leadbeater. The award supports widening participation and access by helping a new undergraduate student from a lower-income background to live in College during their first year at St John’s.
Worth up to £1,000 annually, the award contributes towards College accommodation costs while recognising students who will make a positive and creative contribution to College life.
Current students can apply through St John’s SharePoint.
St John’s College offers 16 choral scholarships each year across the four voice parts, alongside a senior and junior organ scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to students with strong vocal or musical ability, good sight-reading skills, and a willingness to engage with a wide range of repertoire and performance opportunities.
Choral scholarships are awarded for one academic year and carry an honorarium of £300, paid in termly instalments. The Wallis Organ Scholarship carries an honorarium of £420. Vacancies vary each year and may be available across all voice parts and organ scholarships.
This fund is supported by generous contributions from local churches and is intended to assist Cranmer ordinands experiencing financial hardship during training. Awards and loans are typically made in the region of £100–£400.
Members of Cranmer Hall who wish to be considered for support should contact their Tutor.
Generously funded by alum Georg Dalitz, the SJCBC Coaching Bursary supports members of St John’s College Boat Club undertaking coaching qualifications with British Rowing. The bursary helps cover costs associated with courses, safeguarding and first aid training, supporting students to develop coaching experience alongside participation in College rowing.

Presenting my new research at this conference gave me immediate feedback and real happiness – a rare gift in the often long and solitary cycle of writing and publishing. I’m deeply grateful to the St John’s Opportunities Fund for making it possible.
