The impact of generosity is often felt for generations.
Nigel was the first in his family to attend university, but during his second year at St John’s in the 1970s, financial pressures meant he feared he would have to leave. His family simply couldn’t afford to help. Thanks to the quiet generosity of College friends, Nigel was able to remain at John’s, complete his degree and go on to a rewarding career in teaching.
Today, he gives regularly to St John’s himself, helping ensure that today’s students have the same opportunities and support when they need it most.
As a David Wilkinson First Generation Scholar, Ahmed has embraced every aspect of life at St John’s. From rowing and formal dinners to late-night board games and serving as Welfare Officer for Durham University Boxing Club, John’s has become a place where he has found friendship, confidence and opportunities he never expected.
Coming from a state school, Ahmed wasn’t sure what to expect from Durham. He quickly discovered a welcoming community where kindness, encouragement and the support of others enabled him to flourish. Scholarships and donor support help ensure that more students can enjoy those same life-changing experiences.
