Adrian Green

Dr Adrian Green is Associate Professor in History at Durham University, specialising in early modern British and American social and cultural history, with a particular focus on architecture, housing, and landscape. His research explores the relationship between buildings, landscapes, and social change in the early modern period, with publications including Building for England: John Cosin’s Architecture in Renaissance Durham and Cambridge (2016) and Boynton Hall Simply Told (2025). 

 He has contributed to edited volumes, collaborative research projects, and interdisciplinary initiatives linking history, archaeology, and heritage studies.

Following a BA in History at Oxford, his British Academy funded MA in Archaeology at Durham included a study of the St John’s College buildings as his dissertation, and his AHRB funded PhD in Archaeology and History at Durham focused on the history of housing in north-east England, 1570-1730.

Dr Green is internationally recognised for his expertise in early modern architectural and social history and is general editor of the British Record Society Hearth Tax series. He is an active supervisor of doctoral research, teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and regularly contributes to public history and heritage engagement through lectures, exhibitions, and advisory roles with heritage organisations.
