Richard (Dick) Haigh (1930 – 2024)

We have learnt that St John’s alumnus Richard (Dick) Haigh passed away on 29 May 2024 at the age of 93. Richard attended St John’s College in 1954 to take a BA degree in Social Studies and later a Diploma in Theology. He was ordained at Christmas 1959 to the parish of Stanwix, Carlisle, where he met and married his wife, Sydney. They became Church Mission Society (CMS) missionaries and lived in Kashmir for a few years, where Richard was priest-in-charge of All Saint’s, Srinagar. On returning to the UK he served as a priest at a number of parishes before retiring to Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria.

His daughter Philippa writes: “Dad always spoke fondly of his time at St John’s and where he made life-long friends. He proudly wore his College scarf to church and on walks until early 2024. He was a sweet, gentle and generous man throughout his life.”
