Roger Pratt (1947 – 2025)

It is with great sadness that I report on the passing of Roger Pratt (Combined Arts, 1966-69), an Oscar-nominated cinematographer, great St John’s alumnus and good friend. The Guardian obituary relates his extraordinary career, from ‘clapper-boy’ with the Monty Python team, to cinematographer in two of the Harry Potter movies (including filming in Durham Cathedral).

Roger did VSO in Mali after leaving Loughborough Grammar, and his first-year room – shared with Peter Bainbridge, also the son of a Canon – had great mementos of his time in Africa. It quickly became the focus for a group of us, enjoying the freedom of the late ’60s and all that Durham had to offer.

Roger had been ill for some years with young-onset familial Alzheimer’s. We offer our very sincere condolences to Erica, Roger’s wife, and his three children, May, Tim and Lily and four grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
