Vitali Petrenko

Dr Petrenko holds a PhD in Historical Theology from Durham University, with a special focus on Russian Orthodox history and theology. His works include Theology of Icons: A Protestant Perspective, an unpublished MTh thesis in English, but published in Russian, 2000; “West versus East and the Consequences for Russian Christianity”, in the Eurasian Theological Journal, Bogoslovskije razmishleniia, 6, (2006), 69-97; The Development of Authority within the Russian Orthodox Church, (Peter Lang, 2011), Colloquium in Russian, 2012; “Reflections on Church Planting in Latvia”, VTR Publications; Verlag für Theologie und Religionswissenschaft, 2014; “A Dangerous Servant: A Critical Analysis of the Speeches of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow during the First Year of the War of Russia against Ukraine (2022-2023)”, European Journal of Theology, 34.2, (2025) 317-338.

His current research is in the Donatist controversy and the schism in the Baptist Union of the 1960s within the Soviet Union. Dr Petrenko was the Director of the Latvian Biblical Centre, Riga, Latvia, for 17 years and is currently an Associate Professor at the Norwegian School of Leadership and Theology in Oslo. He has also supervised and examined BA and PhD theses for North-West University, South Africa
