Costs and scholarships

The David Wilkinson First Generation Scholars Fund was established in 2023 by the outgoing Principal, Revd Professor David Wilkinson, himself a first-generation scholar from the North East. The fund promotes widening participation and access by supporting students from first-generation, lower-income and underrepresented backgrounds to live in College during their first year at St John’s.

The fund offers up to two accommodation scholarships annually, covering up to half of College accommodation costs.

One scholarship of £1,000 is awarded annually to a new postgraduate student at St John’s with a creative project or initiative that will contribute to College life and the postgraduate community.

The scholarship is intended to provide additional financial support for students who have secured partial, but not full, funding from other sources.

The Leadbeater Award was established in 2018 through a generous gift to the College in memory of Gordon Leadbeater. The award supports widening participation and access by helping a new undergraduate student from a lower-income background to live in College during their first year at St John’s.

Worth up to £1,000 annually, the award contributes towards College accommodation costs while recognising students who will make a positive and creative contribution to College life.

St John’s College offers 16 choral scholarships each year across the four voice parts, alongside a senior and junior organ scholarship. Scholarships are awarded to students with strong vocal or musical ability, good sight-reading skills, and a willingness to engage with a wide range of repertoire and performance opportunities.

Choral scholarships are awarded for one academic year and carry an honorarium of £300, paid in termly instalments. The Wallis Organ Scholarship carries an honorarium of £420. Vacancies vary each year and may be available across all voice parts and organ scholarships.

This fund is supported by generous contributions from local churches and is intended to assist Cranmer ordinands experiencing financial hardship during training. Awards and loans are typically made in the region of £100–£400.

Generously funded by alum Georg Dalitz, the SJCBC Coaching Bursary supports members of St John’s College Boat Club undertaking coaching qualifications with British Rowing. The bursary helps cover costs associated with courses, safeguarding and first aid training, supporting students to develop coaching experience alongside participation in College rowing.
